In recognition of the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month, the Franklin County Commissioners specially passed a resolution during the general session on May 19, 2009. The resolution praises that the vast diversity of languages, religions and cultural traditions of Asian Americans continues to strengthen the fabric of American society. It acknowledges Asian Americans who have endured and overcome hardship and heartache, were subject to unjust working conditions, prejudice and discrimination, yet have excelled. Amidst these struggles, Asian Americans have contributed in great and significant ways to all aspects of society, creating works of literature and art, thriving as American athletes and in the world of academia. Asian Americans have played a vital role in our Nation’s economic and technological growth by establishing successful enterprises and pushing the limits of science, serving in positions of leadership within the government. The resolution was accepted by Theresa Lee, former president of OCA Columbus Chapter and Siu-Leung Lee, board member of the same organization. Paula Brooks, president of the Franklin County Commission, who just returned from a business trip to China, talks about her wonderful cultural experience and thanks Dr. Lee for his valuable inputs. Theresa Lee quotes President Obama that, “Our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth.” Commissioner Marilyn Brown reflects that Chinese Americans have endured hardship and discrimination and yet have excelled. She feels at heart as a Jewish American for similar experiences. Commissioner O’Grady adds that he and his son are looking forward to enjoying the coming Asian Festival this weekend.
